The Third Man

developed for Self

Conducted during the First Year of Architecture School – The Third Man – analyzes the movie by the same name. The thrilling mystery leads viewers through several plot twists while utilizing light ans shadow dramatically – in addition to emphasizing architectural elements. Clips taken from the motion picture were then formed into a model, a negative representation of the space created by a tunnel while a chase is underway. This model was then deconstructed and recreated into a drawing, representing the reorganization of light and shadow into a singular element which becomes blurred once desaturated. A twist in the project then produces a machine that performs a function. Following the creation of a pulley – a character to operate the machine, and subsequently a structure to house both machine and operator were designed.

The structure forms a new ‘lighthouse’ which utilizes fireworks to warn citizens of the edge of the light safety from the dark forest. The main areas for living are contained within a hierarchy of required vertical height. For example – Eating and showering reasonably require full head height, Working space 2/3 head heading, Sleeping/Resting Space 1/3 head height. These spaces are then offset from each other and stacked in order to form the uppermost portion of the tower. The machine works to resupply the tower with rations and signalling devices. As the Operator is an old sea captain – convicted of crimes at sea – he is forbidden to leave his dangerous post for the good of the civilization.
