Penn State Arboretum Education Center

developed for Self

The building connects the three major routes of passage to and from the arboretum: walking, biking, & driving. The arriving visitor’s paths are directly tied to the three major entrances to the arboretum. Each part has a distinct materiality in order to assist in way finding and definition of the building. The specific materials were then used to their strengths & natural tenancies in order to create a unique texture specific to each pathway. Stone, load bearing, thick walls, barrel vaulted ceilings, limited openings. Wood, post & beam, colonnades, trellises, generous openings. Steel, column & plate, curving slices, bending but not breaking. Concrete – the tie between the pieces, floor & canopy. The program, branching from the paths, provides opportunities along the passages for respite, before entering the arboretum.
